Biometrics research briefs: UK applications, daily interactions, and global systems market
Most British people are happy to replace traditional identity verification methods with biometrics to unlock their phones, but support for other applications varies, a survey from Equifax reported by Your Money shows.
The survey shows 71 percent would use fingerprint, facial or iris biometrics to access a mobile phone, and 64 percent would use biometrics to control access to their laptop or tablet. Other relatively popular uses for biometrics include age verification at bars or shops (60 percent) and voting (58 percent), but biometric cash withdrawal (46 percent), starting a car (45 percent) and unlocking a front door (41 percent) are less popular.
Fingerprint biometrics are considered the most secure by the highest number of respondents, at 31 percent, and are also considered likely to be most prevalent over the next decade by 30 percent, well ahead of facial recognition (18 percent) and eye biometrics.
“The techniques being used to scam Brits are increasingly sophisticated, and breaking into the old world of signatures and pin codes is bread and butter for today’s fraudsters,” comments Equifax UK Head of ID & Fraud Keith McGill. “Further implementation of biometric options within the financial services sector will go a long way to tackle this. Tapping into our unique biological passcodes can help businesses and consumers stay ahead of the curve, and as the technology develops, it will become even more widespread, trusted and popular in the years to come.”
Daily interactions to grow
A new report from BCC Research available from Research and Markets explores the advantages of biometrics in daily life, including for onboarding, access control, border control and policing applications. Increasing automation and use of internet of things (IoT) devices to improve people’s quality of life are expected to significantly impact the global biometrics market, according to the report.
The 59-page “Biometrics in Everyday Life” report covers different applications, markets, and technologies for biometrics, and reviews many different types of biometrics. Modalities discussed include body salinity, grip recognition, nail bed recognition, skin luminance, and skull resonance.
Global systems market
Increasing use in consumer electronics, government initiatives, growing surveillance needs and increasing penetration in automotive and enterprise applications are expected to drive the global market for biometrics systems from $33 billion in 2019 to $65.3 billion by 2024, a 14.6 percent CAGR, according to new research from MarketsandMarkets.
The “Biometric System Market by Authentication Type, Offering, Functionality, End User And Region – Global Forecast to 2024” report indicates single-factor authentication will remain the largest segment through the forecast period, though multimodal biometrics will grow faster, due to adoption for border control and anti-spoofing applications.
Smart devices and smartphones will keep consumer electronics in the lead among biometric system types, according to the report, which also breaks down the market geographically, and identifies leading suppliers.
